Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop Canonsburg

I know some Pittsburghers don’t like to cross rivers.
As someone who lives in the North Hills, I get it. Sometimes heading to the South Hills can feel like planning a day trip. But over the years, we’ve found a handful of places that are absolutely worth the tunnels and bridges.
North Strabane Park? Worth it.
Tanger Outlets? Worth it.
Sarris Candies? Definitely worth it.
Fiori’s Pizza? No question.
And Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop in Canonsburg is absolutely on that list.
The moment you walk through the doors, you’re greeted by shelves packed with colorful candy, nostalgic favorites, quirky gifts, toys, and glass-bottled sodas. It’s the kind of place that makes both kids and adults feel like they’ve stepped into a giant treasure hunt.
One of the biggest draws is Grandpa Joe’s famous “$5 Candy Buffet.” Grab a box, fill it with your favorite treats, and pay just five dollars. It’s become a tradition for many families… and honestly, it’s the perfect stop before heading to the movies or when you’re looking for a fun little outing that doesn’t require a full day of planning.

Another thing that makes the Canonsburg location extra special is that it’s the original Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop. This store has several unique features that you won’t find everywhere, including an old bank vault, an in-store train, a retro gamer room, and plenty of fun surprises tucked throughout the shop.

Be sure to ask about Snozzberries, Grandpa Joe’s unique loyalty program inspired by the world of Willy Wonka. Shoppers earn one Snozzberry for every dollar spent, which can be saved and redeemed for rewards. Once you reach certain milestones, you’ll get the chance to enter the store’s famous vault and choose a safety deposit box containing prizes, gift cards, exclusive merchandise, and other surprises. It’s a fun bonus that gives kids (and adults) another reason to look forward to their next visit.

What I love most about Grandpa Joe’s is that there truly is something for everyone. Kids love browsing the candy and toys, while adults usually end up pointing out candies they haven’t seen since they were children. Every visit seems to turn into a game of, “Oh wow, I remember these!”
Our family has visited several Grandpa Joe’s locations over the years, including the stores in the Strip District, Canonsburg, and Mt. Lebanon. Each one has its own personality, but they all have that same fun, nostalgic feel. The Beaver location is still on our family’s to-do list.

Whether you’re hunting for a unique gift, stocking up on old-school candy favorites, or simply looking for a fun place to explore with the kids, Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop is one of those destinations that makes the drive worthwhile.
Even if it means crossing a river.
Make a Day of It
If you’re making the trip to Canonsburg, don’t stop with just candy. North Strabane Park is one of our family’s favorite parks in the South Hills, and it’s a great place to let the kids run and play before (or after) loading up on treats.

And if one candy store isn’t enough, Sarris Candies is just a few minutes away. Between the giant candy selection, chocolates, and ice cream, it’s basically impossible to leave empty-handed. Add in Grandpa Joe’s, and you’ve got yourself a pretty sweet South Hills adventure.
