Crable Playground at Arts Landing: A Pittsburgh Mom’s Review

If you’re looking for family-friendly things to do in downtown Pittsburgh, Crable Playground at Arts Landing is one of the city’s newest spaces worth exploring with kids.

Located in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, Arts Landing is a beautiful 4-acre public space that blends playground fun, art and open green space right along the riverfront. As a Pittsburgh mom, I’m always searching for places that feel enjoyable for both younger and older kids — and this space definitely stands out from a typical playground visit.

One of the first things I noticed was how thoughtfully designed the area feels. Throughout the park, you’ll find unique art installations mixed into the landscape, giving the entire space a modern but welcoming feel. I especially loved the incorporation of natural wood elements throughout the playground areas. It gives the park a softer, more nature-inspired atmosphere compared to brightly colored plastic playgrounds.

The playground itself is divided into two separate areas. There’s a larger playground designed for children ages 5–12 years, along with a smaller section geared toward younger children ages 2–5 years. The toddler and preschool space includes a smaller wooden climbing structure along with adorable forest animal statues that younger kids will love exploring around.

One thing that really impressed me was just how much room there is. The entire park feels incredibly open and spacious, making it a great spot for kids who simply need room to run around and burn energy. Even when other families are visiting, the large layout helps the space feel less crowded.

Parents will also appreciate the amount of seating located around the playground perimeter. It’s easy to find a place to sit while still keeping an eye on the kids.

That said, there are a few things families should know before visiting. The playground area is not fenced in, and because it’s located downtown, nearby traffic can get busy. Parents with younger children or runners will definitely want to stay alert.

Another thing to note is that there currently isn’t access to public bathrooms directly inside the park. However, the location makes it easy to walk to nearby restaurants and businesses throughout downtown Pittsburgh and the Cultural District if needed.

Overall, Crable Playground at Arts Landing feels like a refreshing addition to Pittsburgh’s growing list of family-friendly destinations. Between the artistic atmosphere, open space and thoughtfully designed playground areas, it’s a fun stop whether you’re spending the day downtown or simply looking for a new Pittsburgh playground to explore with kids.

If you’re planning a visit, I’d recommend bringing water, comfortable walking shoes and allowing extra time for kids to explore the surrounding park space beyond just the playground itself.
