Real Mom Review of Avonworth Community Park
With Avonworth Community Park it was love at first sight! What’s not to love about a huge wooden playground with a creek to explore and plenty of shade?
Our favorite part of this playground was how much shade there was – nearly full coverage. The playground itself wasn’t as large as some of the other wooden playgrounds we’ve visited in Pittsburgh but there was still plenty to play on and space to run around! From climbing equipment, swings, slides and more, there was something to entertain kids of every age. Most of the playground had a wooden fence around it and trees/forest served as a natural barrier on one side.
Unlike most wooden playgrounds, the ground was not covered in mulch – but rather, small stones. I actually prefer the small stones over the mulch because it gave better footing and didn’t get stuck to everything like mulch typically does.
In front of the playground there’s a wide creek. When we visited, it was very wide and shallow (this was in May – I’m not sure if that changes throughout the year). In fact, it was shallow enough for my toddler to walk along the rocks and explore comfortably without getting soaked!
The Avonworth Community Park is very easy to find and there’s plenty of parking. This is the perfect park to pack a picnic and spend an afternoon. Plenty of picnic tables, benches and pavilions can be found throughout the park. You can find on-site bathrooms to the left of the playground.
In the area you’ll also find trails for hiking, baseball fields and, if you’re visiting during summer months, you may also want to check out the nearby Avonworth Community Pool.
