If you’ve been following us on Facebook or Twitter, you know how much we’ve been gushing about how much we love Round Hill Park and exhibit farm. In my opinion, it doesn’t get much better. Not only is it completely free to visit, but includes access to tons of animals on the exhibit farm, a small sprinkler park, hiking trails… and an awesome playground.

Real Mom Review: Round Hill Park Playground

In the Pittsburgh Playground series, I’ve been traveling around the city to visit the city’s most notable playground and provide an unbiased review. Here are some of the things I was looking for:

  • How was the quality, diversity, and accessibility of the playgrounds equipment?
  • Is the area free of hazards (i.e. free of defects, equipment in good repair, no traffic hazards, etc.)?
  • Did the playground encourage play and curiosity through a variety of spaces, age appropriate materials flexible equipment?

Pros

The playground is new- I believe it was installed the summer of 2012 or 2013. The equipment is in great condition. Located directly across the street from the sprinkler area, the playground is similar to Black & Yellow Playground in North Park. It’s a single large structure has a wide pathway that flows through the middle of the playground with various climbing and balancing elements.

There was plenty of green space surrounding the play area and a couple benches for seating. While the entire area is not shaded, canopies that hang over the playground area provide some areas of shade.

Cons

It doesn’t look as though they’re done developing the area. The hilly areas need attention. They’re were working on a pavillion area with seating when we were there last. Also, while the playground is away from the road, there is no fencing that separates and encloses the area.

Round Hill Park playground is certainly worth a visit while you’re at the farm. Don’t forget plenty of sunscreen, bug spray, a change of clothes and bread or oats to feed the ducksWe’d like to make another trip out before the summer is over.
