Heinz Hall

As a Pittsburgh parent, I’m so grateful of all the opportunities to expose my child to culture through music, theater, art and more. So many amazing performances and shows offer kid friendly renditions that are family focused. Forget stuffy museums where you can’t touch anything, we love places with interactive elements, live music to sing along with and the kind art you can appreciate by getting your hands dirty!

Speaking of singing along… we successfully crossed off a long awaited experience from our bucket list: watching/listening to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Heinz Hall. If you’ve ever considered taking your children to enjoy the live music of the orchestra but not sure how, check out the three programs that happen multiple times throughout the year.

Fiddlesticks Family Orchestra

Fiddlesticks is the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s family friendly show geared toward children ages 3-8 years old. Tickets range from about $12 – $23, depending on seating. Get your tickets in advance because they sell out quickly!

About an hour before any Fiddlesticks family concert starts, they open the doors and offer a variety of activities throughout Heinz Hall called Discovery Time Adventures. Each room offers something different: sing along, dance along, craft room, etc. We loved being able to walk around and look at all the beautiful architecture in Heinz Hall.

Each Fiddlesticks family concert series is different, each with it’s own theme to the performances and music. We recently attended “Carnival of Animals.”

Lawrence Loh, Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, had an amazing stage presence and did a great job introducing the younger audience to the concert performance. Mr. Loh created the Fiddlesticks family concert series as he’s an advocate of early childhood exposure to music.

We were also super excited for the guest performance that accompanied the orchestra – the cartooning awesomeness of Toonseum director/founder, Joe Wos. Joe helped illustrate the animals as the symphony performed.
