If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing dozens of colorful hot air balloons floating across the sky, the Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Rally in Meadville, Pennsylvania (about 1.5hr north of Pittsburgh) is worth adding to your summer bucket list.

As someone who grew up in Meadville before moving to Pittsburgh after high school, the Thurston Classic is one of those events that brings back a lot of memories. I remember looking forward to it every summer and watching the balloons drift across the skyline.

After moving to Pittsburgh, I continued coming back. Now I bring my kids so they can experience the same tradition I grew up with.

It’s been a beloved community tradition for decades and continues to be one of the most unique family-friendly events in northwestern Pennsylvania.

If you’re planning a visit, here are five things to know before you go.

1. The Best Part? Admission Is Free

One of the reasons the Thurston Classic has remained so popular over the years is that it’s completely free to attend.

Families can enjoy balloon launches, competitions, and the overall experience without spending a dime on admission. It’s a great option for anyone looking for a memorable summer outing that won’t stretch the budget.

2. Keep an Eye on the Schedule and the Weather

If you’re planning a visit to the Thurston Classic, it’s worth taking a quick look at the schedule before heading out. While there are activities throughout the weekend, these are some of the most popular balloon events:

Thursday, June 18

  • 5:00 PM — Night Glow

Friday, June 19

  • 4:00 PM — Balloon Flight

Saturday, June 20

  • 6:00 AM — Sanctioned Race
  • 4:00 PM — Sanctioned Race

Sunday, June 21

  • 6:00 AM — Sanctioned Race

Also, keep in mind, hot air balloons are at the mercy of Mother Nature!

Weather conditions play a major role in whether balloons can safely launch, so schedules may change if winds or storms move through the area. Before heading out, be sure to check the latest event schedule and weather updates.

Morning launches and evening flights are often crowd favorites, but flexibility is key.

3. Arrive Early and Be Ready for a Short Walk

The Thurston Classic takes place at the Robertson Athletic Complex at Allegheny College (204 Park Avenue, Meadville).

Visitors should know that the balloon launch field is a short walk from the general parking area. A designated pedestrian path will be available, and spectators are encouraged to use the marked route. The adjacent maintenance road is not open to pedestrian traffic.

For those who prefer not to walk, shuttle service is available from:

  • The entry to Robinson Field, south of the general parking area
  • The VIP parking lot

Arriving early can help you find parking more easily and secure a great spot to watch the balloons.

4. You’re Here to Watch the Balloons, Not Ride Them

One of the biggest misconceptions first-time visitors have is assuming they’ll be able to take a hot air balloon ride.

The Thurston Classic is a balloon rally, not a public balloon ride event. While you’ll have the opportunity to see balloons up close, watch launches, meet pilots, and enjoy the excitement of the event, most visitors should not expect to ride in a balloon.

Trust me, the view from the ground is pretty incredible!

5. Bring a Blanket and Come Prepared

There is no permanent seating in the viewing area.

The launch viewing area includes a steep bank and a limited amount of level lawn space. Blankets are highly recommended, while lawn chairs work best in the flatter sections of the viewing area.

You’ll also want to bring:

  • Sunscreen
  • Water
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunglasses
  • A camera or phone for photos

If you’re planning to stay for evening events or the Night Glow, a light jacket may come in handy once the sun goes down.

A Meadville Tradition Worth Experiencing

Whether you’re a longtime Meadville resident, a former local returning home for the weekend, or a Pittsburgh family looking for a unique road trip, the Thurston Classic is one of those events that’s easy to love.

For me, it’s a reminder of growing up in Meadville and one of the summer traditions I always looked forward to. There’s something special about watching a sky full of colorful balloons… a sight that never seems to lose its magic, no matter how old you are!
