About Sewickley War Memorial Park
With multiple playgrounds, plenty of green space, a creek to explore and more, Sewickley War Memorial Park has almost everything children AND parents could ask for in a park/playground. The area is quietly nestled into surrounding trees and plenty far away from traffic or roads.
There’s tons of on site parking nearby. If you’re traveling with little ones – you don’t have to walk very far but there are no walking paths for strollers. I struggled a little bit with our little umbrella stroller. However, once you get from the parking lot to the playground you’ll be fine. The entire playground is surfaced with soft rubber.
There were porta-potties available at the park but no on-site bathrooms that I could see.
Once you’re there, you can’t miss the bright, bold colors of the playground that compliment all the beautiful, natural green surroundings. Named after Hoey’s Run (the stream that runs beside the playground), Hoey’s Hideaway includes multiple playgrounds designed for all ages and skill levels.
Large Hoey’s Hideaway Playground
The large playground for children ages 5 – 12 years. It’s relatively new and includes fun, unique equipment such as a rock climbing wall, zip line (track ride), swings and plenty to climb and slide on. While canopies shade parts of the playspace, most of the playground is in direct sun. Bushes surround the area and create a divider from the woods nearby.
Small Hoey’s Hideaway Playground
If you continue across the green space you’ll see additional playground specially designed for younger children. We went to this playground specifically because it was suggested as a great toddler playground- and it totally was! The smaller playground at Sewickley War Memorial Park has some of the best playground equipment for toddlers and young preschoolers. The nearby trees provide a canopy of shade over some of the area. There were three different play areas including on-ground, low-to-the-ground and regular playground equipment (for ages 2-5 yrs).
Little walkers and crawlers will delight in the small nooks and play houses with activity panels and manipulatives. Most of the area is flat so parents will love the accessible sightlines that let you keep an eye on the kids. The area is not fenced in but is tucked far away from any traffic or main roads. For older toddlers with better footing, there are springy rides and a small train themed playground with a long tunnel, small slide and playhouse.
Located in the same area is also a larger playground suitable for preschool children with a gradual incline entry, slides and climbing equipment. There’s a variety of swings including an accessible swing, baby swings and regular swings.
Additional Park Features
The park is absolutely beautiful and would make a great summer party venue. There are pavilions available for rent.
If you venture up the large hill you’ll find a hiking trail. There’s also a small gazebo with benches located in-between the two playgrounds. Also, if the weather is cooperating, kids will most certainly enjoy the creek/stream to play and splash around in!
Planning a Visit
Address: Sewickley War Memorial Park, 625 Blackburn Road Sewickley, PA 15043
We would definitely recommend this playground and even visit again! We’re not local to the Sewickley area and it was about a 30 minute drive for us. It wasn’t too hard to find (although I did pass it the first time and had to circle around the block). I’d suggest bringing an extra change of clothes/shoes for playing in the creek.
