North Park’s Black and Yellow Playground is located right next to North Park’s community pool. We’ve always been huge fans of South Park’s Black and Yellow Park, but I have to admit, this completely blows that playground it away. With three separate playground areas, large grassy knolls and brand new equipment, kids will surely want to keep coming back.
As residents of the North Hills area, we frequent North Park often. However, it took us nearly 2 years to discover this amazing park! Our travels took us primarily to the area around the Boat House, so we were super excited to head into uncharted territory to discover this amazing playground.

Real Mom Review: North Park Black and Yellow Playground

North Park Black and Yellow Playground scored 91% on the Pittsburgh Playground Rating System.

Pros
The largest of the three playgrounds is the Black and Yellow playground. It has tons of interactive elements such as vertical spinning game boards, telescopes and steering wheels. Sloped, wide walkways allow users to gain easy access across most of the playground. I’m not sure what year this playground was built, but it had to have been fairly recent. The equipment still has a glossy sheen and all the moving parts are in great working condition.

Two additional playgrounds are located within the same area, directly behind the Black and Yellow playground. They’re slightly smaller but are still in great condition. You’ll find interactive features there as well. Two swing sets located within the playgrounds area.

In all our visits, the grass and mulch areas are kept well manicured and the grounds have been pretty much free from trash. While the entire playground is not fenced in, there is a large fence with a locking gate that divides the playgrounds from the busier side of the parking lot. There’s plenty of green open play space for organized games such as tag or kickball. Playful paths are marked with permanently painted hop-scotch boards and pictures. Adults will appreciate multiple benches throughout the playground area, with a couple of them located under shade trees.

Cons
While there was a fence that divided the busy side of the parking lot from the playground, the area was not completely fenced in. In fact, there’s parking very close to the playground proximity. It’s been our experience that cars enter or exit with extreme precaution, however the risk still remains for young ones to run in between cars and into the nearby parking lot.

Also, maybe I’ve been spoiled by Pleasant Kingdom, but I wish there was a little more shade. There’s a large tree near the front and a couple towards the back of the park, but most areas where the children are playing and in completely sunny areas. Bring plenty of sunscreen.
Additional features that would have been awesome to see would be sand or water play areas.

We absolutely love this park and have been frequenting since we discovered it this Spring. It’s located right next to the North Park Swimming Pool so if you’re driving a distance, you could easily make a day of it. While you’re in the area, you might also want to grab lunch or dinner at Over the Bar Bicycle Cafe at the North Park Boat House. They have a rustic, bike inspired vibe with amazing seating that overlooks the lake. Next door you’ll also find kayaks available for rent from Venture Outdoors. Enjoy!
