South Park Game Preserve is located in South Park tucked up behind the Black and Yellow playground. While the game preserve has seen better days, it still remains a staple in the community where children and adults enjoy leisurely afternoon strolls to feed ducks and spot buffalo. In fact, two female baby buffalo were born at the South Park Game Preserve in early April, 2014.
Trails of paved paths take visitors across bridges, small waterfall, large ponds and fountains. Don’t forget the loaf of bread to feed the fish and ducks!* Venture up the path a little further and you’ll find the peacocks and buffalo. Chances are you’ll also be able to spot a few rabbits and wild turkeys.
Save the South Park Game Preserve
Demolition to remove buildings are likely to start this Fall as they are a safety hazard and an eye sore. There’s a community called “Save the South Park Game Preserve” working to improve the community, raise awareness and organize fundraisers. You can read more about the efforts in a recent article from the Pittsburgh Tribune or follow the group Save the South Park Game Preserve on Facebook.
*Please note, too much bread can lead to excessive weight and malnutrition as well as many other problems among ducks, birds and geese. Please offer it in moderation. Instead of bread, you may want to consider grapes, cracked corn or oats as healthy alternatives.
