I wasn’t expecting to have as much fun at Settlers Cabin Wave Pool as I did.

Sure, I knew my 10-year-old daughter would love the waves. But somewhere between getting knocked over by a wave, laughing at myself, and floating across the deep end in an inner tube, I remembered just how much fun a wave pool can be.

My husband, daughter, and I spent a summer afternoon at Settlers Cabin Wave Pool, and it’s one of those places I’d happily recommend to anyone looking for a fun way to cool off near Pittsburgh.

The Waves Make It More Than Just a Pool

The waves run in repeating cycles throughout the day, with breaks in between so everyone has a chance to stand up, catch their breath, and get ready for the next round.

At first, the waves seemed to start about every 10 minutes, although later in the day the timing varied a little.

The first wave caught me completely off guard.

I definitely got rolled around a couple of times, which my daughter thought was absolutely hilarious. Thankfully, I was laughing just as hard.

One thing that surprised me was how different the experience felt depending on where you were in the pool. Near the shallow end, the waves had everyone jumping and riding them toward shore. Out in the deep end, though, floating in an inner tube felt surprisingly calm—more like gently rocking on the water than getting pushed around.

Rent an Inner Tube

If I could give one recommendation, it would be to rent an inner tube.

We originally rented one for my daughter, thinking she’d enjoy it while I swam alongside her.

That lasted about five minutes.

After watching how much fun she was having, I walked right back to the rental stand and got one for myself. It completely changed the experience, and floating over the waves ended up being one of my favorite parts of the day.

When we left around 3:30 p.m., every rental tube was already gone, and people were waiting nearby for one to become available. If riding the waves in a tube is on your list, don’t wait until late afternoon.

The 33-Foot High Dive

We also wandered over to check out the 33-foot high dive.

Neither of us was brave enough to jump, but we were both impressed by just how tall it is. My husband and I immediately looked at each other and said, “We have to bring our teenage son next time.” It’s exactly the kind of thing he’d love.

Safety

One thing I appreciated during our visit was how attentive the lifeguards were.

There were multiple lifeguards focused on the wave pool at all times, in addition to staff stationed throughout the rest of the facility. Seeing so many lifeguards actively watching the water made us feel comfortable letting our daughter enjoy the waves.

If you’re bringing a life jacket, just make sure it’s U.S. Coast Guard approved.

Before heading home, we grabbed ice cream from the snack stand—a pretty great way to end a summer afternoon.

• Outside food, drinks, and coolers are not permitted.
• Rental inner tubes are available, but they may be gone by later in the afternoon.
• There isn’t much shade around the pool deck, although you can usually find shady spots beneath the trees farther back from the water.
• Pool noodles are not permitted.
• Personal life jackets must be U.S. Coast Guard approved.
• Goggles with built-in nose coverings are not permitted.

Would We Go Back?

Without a doubt.

Settlers Cabin Wave Pool was just plain fun.

It’s the kind of place where kids can burn off energy, adults end up feeling like kids again, and everyone leaves tired, happy, and already talking about coming back. We know we will—especially once we bring our teenage son to try that 33-foot high dive.
