Arsenal Park Playground Lawrenceville

I’ll admit… Arsenal Park had somehow never made it onto our playground bucket list.

We finally made our first visit after the park’s brand-new playground was completed. Since we never visited the previous playground, I can’t compare the two, but I can say the new space made a great first impression.

The first thing that caught our attention was the giant climbing structure.

Rather than a traditional playground with multiple slides and platforms, Arsenal Park features an impressive climbing tower that encourages kids to scramble, climb, balance, and explore from every direction. It’s the kind of playground that keeps kids moving and challenges them to think about how they’ll get from one side to the other. If you have a climber in your family, this will probably be their favorite part.

For younger children, there’s a separate toddler playground just a short walk away. It’s smaller and designed with little ones in mind, giving toddlers their own space to play without competing with bigger kids on the main structure.

The playground also includes a swing area and an inclusive, ground-level merry-go-round that’s easy for children of different abilities to enjoy together.

One thing I really appreciated was how open everything felt. Even though the playground is spread out into different areas, it was still easy to keep an eye on both kids.

Beyond the playground itself, Arsenal Park is much more than just a place to play. The historic Lawrenceville park also features walking paths, athletic fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, and plenty of green space, making it easy to spend more than just an hour here. The park sits on the former site of the Allegheny Arsenal, giving it a unique piece of Pittsburgh history as well.

Know Before You Go

Location
Arsenal Park is located at 276 39th Street in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood, just a few blocks from Butler Street and surrounded by restaurants, coffee shops, and local businesses.

Parking
There is a small free parking lot, and additional street parking is available nearby. If the lot is full, we didn’t have much trouble finding street parking.

Restrooms
Permanent restrooms are located near the playground, making it convenient for families spending an afternoon at the park.

Water Play
The park also includes seasonal spray features, making it an even better destination during the warmer months. If you’re visiting on a hot summer day, don’t forget to pack a towel or a change of clothes for the kids.

Make It a Longer Visit
Bring a ball, tennis racket, scooter, or bike if you have one. Between the playground, sports courts, open green space, and walking paths, it’s easy to turn a quick playground stop into a half-day outing.

Final Thoughts

For a first visit, Arsenal Park definitely impressed us.

The climbing structure gives it a completely different feel from many of Pittsburgh’s neighborhood playgrounds, and I love that there’s still a dedicated space for toddlers nearby. Whether you’re exploring Lawrenceville for the day or simply looking for a new playground to add to your rotation, Arsenal Park is absolutely worth the stop.
