A Real Mom Review
South Park Children’s Playground quickly became one of those places where it’s easy to spend far more time than you planned.
One thing I really appreciate is having permanent bathrooms nearby. That alone makes outings with kids so much easier. I also love how much open space surrounds the playground. Even when it’s busy, it rarely feels cramped because families naturally spread out.
If you’re planning to stay awhile, the nearby picnic pavilions are a huge bonus. There are plenty of tables, making it easy to pack a lunch and turn your playground trip into an afternoon at the park.
My first impression was actually that there wasn’t a huge variety of equipment. But after walking around a bit more, I realized that’s not really the case… it just feels that way because everything is spread across such a large area instead of being packed into one giant structure. Once we started exploring, we kept finding more things to play on.
The vending machines and water fountains are another nice touch, especially on hot summer days.
A couple things to note:
There’s also very little natural shade, so summer visits can get hot. Hats, sunscreen, and plenty of water are definitely a good idea.
Also, the playground isn’t fenced, so if you have adventurous toddlers who like to wander, you’ll want to keep a close eye on them.
Overall, though, South Park Children’s Playground is an easy recommendation. Between the modern equipment, spacious layout, convenient amenities, and beautiful park setting, it’s one of the best playgrounds in the Pittsburgh area for families looking to spend some time outdoors.
