SUMMARY:Western Pennsylvania Model Railroad Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Western Pennsylvania Model Railroad Museum is a volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of history of railroading in the Pittsburgh area. This is done in part by creating a 40′ X 100′ HO scale\, prototypical and historically accurate model railroad. A project that has been on going since 1988. \nMeasuring in at 4\,000 square feet\, the display is one of the largest in the nation. It depicts the tracks between Pittsburgh\, PA to Cumberland Maryland set in the summer of 1952\, and portrays numerous landmarks such as the P&LE train station (Market Square in Pittsburgh)\, J&L Steel Mill\, Cox’s Department Store (McKeesport\, PA)\, Falling Water\, Ohiopyle PA\, Helmstetter’s Curve and the Cumberland Station (Cumberland\, MD). \nThe Holiday Train Show runs from November 8th through January 11th. Bring your flashlight and after decorating a bag for the candy canes\, we will go and look for the hidden candy canes. In between our searches we can enjoy some hot chocolate and popcorn while singing carols with Divine Ridge and our special guest Santa! Pre-registration is required. The cost is $5.00 per child for pre-registration up through November 7. Registration after November 7 will be $7.00. Save when you register early! The fun starts at 5:00 p.m. at the Carousel Shelter.

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Pittsburgh’s Light Up Night festivities\, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre will bring the magic of The Nutcracker to Phipps’ historic glasshouse on Friday\, Nov. 21\, with Poinsettias and Pointe Shoes. \nThis family-friendly event features a sampling of ballet vignettes from Terrence S. Orr’s The Nutcracker and a sneak peek of the rare poinsettias\, illuminated evergreens and festive color arrangements of Phipps’ Winter Flower Show. A cast of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School’s Pre-Professional students will perform some of the ballet’s most iconic choreography\, including the grand pas de deux of the Sugarplum Fairy and Cavalier. As they train for professional ballet careers\, many of these next-generation dancers will join PBT company members on the Benedum Center stage as snowflakes\, flowers and other supporting roles in PBT’s main-stage production of The Nutcracker. \nEach performance will conclude with a meet-and-greet with the Sugarplum Fairy – and other costumed dancers – and photo opportunities for families. Registered guests can also explore Phipps’ gardens and stop by the café for wine and refreshments.

Submissions will be on display at the Municipal Building starting on Light Night\, Thursday\, November 20\, 6-9 p.m.\, and will also be available for viewing on Friday\, November 21\, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
