DESCRIPTION:The Allegheny Observatory is an astronomical research institution\, a part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh. The facility is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and is designated as a Pennsylvania state and Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation historic landmark. \nNight tours are every Thursday from from April through August. \nAll tours begin at 8 p.m. and last until approximately 10 p.m. A short slide or film presentation is shown followed by a walking tour of the building finally ending up at the 13″ Fitz-Clark refractor (one of only two in existence). If it’s a clear night you would be shown whatever celestial objects are within range of the telescope that night. The tours are free of charge but you must have a reservation. To make a reservation call 412-321-2400 between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Special stations located throughout each garden will provide information on native pollinators\, herbs\, composting and rain barrels. \nA Penn State Master Food Preserver will discuss the process of preserving fruits and vegetables through drying\, freezing\, and canning. Free testing of the dial gauge for your pressure canner will also be available. \nVisit with local beekeepers and take guided tours of the annual flower trials\, pollinator gardens and herb gardens while the kids enjoy hands-on gardening activities. Sample a variety of locally-grown tomatoes\, roasted garlic and basil. Don’t forget to vote for your favorites! \nThe garden market will feature fresh tomatoes\, garlic\, peppers\, and an assortment of summer vegetables grown by the Master Gardeners. The market will also feature a selection of perennials\, dried and fresh cut flowers\, and other gardening items for purchase. Master Gardeners will be staffing the Q&A table to identify plants\, diagnose problems and answer your gardening questions. They will have Soil Test Kits available for $9 each. \nThe Penn State Extension Demonstration Gardens at North and South Parks showcase annual and perennial plants that perform well in our climate and soils. SUMMARY:Allegheny Observatory Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Allegheny Observatory is an astronomical research institution\, a part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh. The facility is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and is designated as a Pennsylvania state and Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation historic landmark. \nNight tours are every Thursday from from April through August. \nAll tours begin at 8 p.m. and last until approximately 10 p.m. A short slide or film presentation is shown followed by a walking tour of the building finally ending up at the 13″ Fitz-Clark refractor (one of only two in existence). If it’s a clear night you would be shown whatever celestial objects are within range of the telescope that night. The tours are free of charge but you must have a reservation. To make a reservation call 412-321-2400 between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
