SUMMARY:Allegheny Observatory Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Allegheny Observatory is an astronomical research institution\, a part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh. The facility is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and is designated as a Pennsylvania state and Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation historic landmark. \nNight tours are every Thursday from from April through August. \nAll tours begin at 8 p.m. and last until approximately 10 p.m. A short slide or film presentation is shown followed by a walking tour of the building finally ending up at the 13″ Fitz-Clark refractor (one of only two in existence). If it’s a clear night you would be shown whatever celestial objects are within range of the telescope that night. The tours are free of charge but you must have a reservation. To make a reservation call 412-321-2400 between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the birth of our country at the birthplace of Pittsburgh. At 11 a.m.\, visitors to Point State Park can join local veterans\, Boy and Girl Scouts\, and elected officials to help raise a 13-star\, 36-foot American flag as part of a special Fourth of July ceremony at Fort Pitt Museum. The American flag is the same size and star pattern that originally flew over Fort Pitt more than 200 years ago. Following the flag raising and singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner\,” the Fourth at the Fort event will feature a live reading of the Declaration of Independence by a special guest. Later in the evening\, the Fort Pitt Museum will fire its new replica 18th century cannon to kick off the annual fireworks display at Point State Park. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:70 Years of Celebration in the Lawrenceville Community
DESCRIPTION:For 70 years\, the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Lawrenceville has continued to hold an Independence Day festival that is filled with softball and baseball games\, children’s races\, Citipark’s Art Cart\, KSWA wrestling show\, pony rides\, a petting zoo\, music and entertainment\, refreshments\, and\, of course\, world-class Zambelli fireworks. This year the celebration will take place on July 5\, 2014 beginning at 11:00 a.m. in Arsenal Park. \nThe Lawrenceville Fireworks Committee\, a group of resident volunteers\, has been the governing force behind the celebration for many years. Working closely with Lawrenceville United for event and logistical support\, they spend their evenings and weekends in planning meetings\, purchasing supplies\, recruiting support and planning an off-season fundraiser. Despite the growth and development of Lawrenceville in recent years\, it is a community event that has stood the test of time and continues to bring long-time area residents\, their families\, and the newer area residents together for a day of celebration in Arsenal Park. DESCRIPTION:The annual Fourth of July event is a momentous occasion in Ross not to be missed. The festivities will begin at 11:00 a.m. with our one of a kind parade followed by a picnic lunch under the trees on the Ross Common. There will be food trucks offering a tasty selection for lunch\, the PTA will continue their tradition of $1.00 beverages kids will enjoy some good old fashioned games.

DESCRIPTION:The Allegheny Observatory is an astronomical research institution\, a part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh. The facility is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and is designated as a Pennsylvania state and Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation historic landmark. \nNight tours are every Thursday from from April through August. \nAll tours begin at 8 p.m. and last until approximately 10 p.m. A short slide or film presentation is shown followed by a walking tour of the building finally ending up at the 13″ Fitz-Clark refractor (one of only two in existence). If it’s a clear night you would be shown whatever celestial objects are within range of the telescope that night. The tours are free of charge but you must have a reservation. To make a reservation call 412-321-2400 between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

And it’s FREE! \nThe 2nd Annual Deutschtown Music Festival is a free music and arts festival taking place on Saturday\, July 12th on the NorthSide of Pittsburgh – located within the East Ohio Street business district. This non-profit event is hosted by the East Allegheny Community Council and supported by bordering neighborhood groups The Spring Hill Civic League\, Community Alliance of Spring Garden East Deutschtown and the Troy Hill Citizens\, Inc. \nSponsors for this year’s event are WYEP\, Highmark\, The Sprout Fund\, The Buhl Foundation\, Hear Corp and Stage AE. \nFamily-friendly daytime activities include a flea market\, artists’ market\, Citiparks Roving Art Cart\, multiple food vendors and trucks. Numerous musical acts are spread over three outdoor stages\, a singer-songwriter showcase in Bistro To Go and a gospel stage at Damascus Church of God in Christ. James Street Speakeasy will play host to over 15 different jazz performers starting at 1pm and continuing late into the night. \nBeginning at 8pm – 13 different walkable venues (with 15 stages) host over 60 bands\, one per hour. \nA free shuttle bus will transport attendees around the neighborhood – including a stop at the North Shore T station close to PNC Park. \nThe purpose of this event is to promote the vibrant Deutschtown neighborhood while also showcasing the amazing local talent in the Pittsburgh region. All bands and performers donate their time and efforts. There will be a wide variety of music styles\, including jazz\, blues\, rock\, bluegrass\, German\, and electronic. The daytime portion is designed to be a family-friendly event\, with numerous food trucks\, a flea market\, and other activities to supplement the music. Throughout the day and night\, a free shuttle with several stops in the Northside and Northshore will be available to the 3-5\,000 people that are expected to attend.

Five dates this summer\, Thursdays beginning at 7pm. \n  \nJuly 17 – Michael Christopher \nBring a lawn chair or blanket Despite growing up in a small rural town\, singer/songwriter/guitarist Michael Christopher didn’t discover country music until his college days\, when he found that its storytelling left a lingering impression. In 2008\, he assembled a group of experienced musicians in the Pittsburgh area to form a band. The band has played festivals\, fairs\, celebrations and private events\, as well as broadcast performances and opening for national acts. \nJuly 24 – Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh.  Dedicated to composing\, promoting and performing chamber music for wind instruments\, the Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh was founded in 2003 to bring high-quality wind music to the greater Pittsburgh community.  The quintet performs in concert halls\, local cultural events\, private homes\, and is regularly featured on WQED-FM.  For their Cranberry concert\, the ensemble will offer a program of pops music and summer favorites. \nJuly 31 – Kardaz. – Kardaz is a six-member pop rock band styled after American and British bands of the 1960s and ‘70s.  The group flawlessly replicates the harmonic vocals and visuals of that era for audience throughout western Pennsylvania.  In addition to vocals\, Kardaz incorporates flute\, saxophone\, recorder\, 12-string guitar\, harmonica\, and percussions\, into their performances.   \nAugust 7 – The Stickers.  The Stickers – three Western Pennsylvania brothers with a love of country music – have taken their passion onto the global stage with concerts and airplay in both the U.S. and Europe\, including several top ten songs overseas.  Two-time CMA Festival artists\, The Stickers have appeared with some of the genre’s leading performers and have been named Billboard song writing winners on three occasions.  \nAugust 14 – School of Rock.  For more than 15 years\, School of Rock – a music school started in Philadelphia that currently includes 130 franchisees in seven different countries\, including one in Wexford – has inspired kids to rock on stage and in life.  Its students have played thousands of concerts\, to more than 100\,000 people\, including music festivals Lollapalooza\, Austin City Limits\, and Summerfest.   Its Cranberry concert will focus on cover songs from the 1960s to today.
