DESCRIPTION:Experience the magic as we bring a beloved holiday carol to life with an all-new show featuring festive evergreens\, bright blooms and glowing glass.\nTake a walk in our “Winter Wonderland” as we bring to life one of the most beloved carols of all time. With lush evergreens\, bright blooms\, illuminated glass and our stunning outdoor Winter Light Garden\, Phipps will sparkle and shine like never before. \nWritten by Pennsylvania native Dick Smith in 1904\, “Winter Wonderland” is perhaps one of the best-known carols of all time. For this year’s Winter Flower Show\, the lyrics of this delightful song will be brought to life as they are represented through artful arrangements of LED lights\, decorated fir trees\, whimsical props\, and\, of course\, plenty of seasonal favorites such as colorful poinsettias\, aromatic paperwhites and showy amaryllis. \nAdding to the festive atmosphere\, indoor displays of glowing glass will make a return this year\, while outside\, in the Outdoor and Discovery Gardens\, the Winter Light Garden will sparkle with luminous orbs\, trees and fountains of light. Garden Railroad will be on view too\, taking you back in time to the Gold Rush as you explore the landscapes of northern California and Mt. Shasta — complete with prospectors\, water features\, interactive buttons for children to push\, and miniature living plants\, shrubs and trees. \nWinter Flower Show\, designed by Terra Design Studios\, LLC\, and Winter Light Garden\, designed by Phipps Exhibit Coordinator Jordyn Melino\, run through Jan. 11\, 2015. Daily hours for Winter Flower Show are 9:30 a.m. – 11 p.m. and 5 – 11 p.m. for Winter Light Garden. Phipps closes at 5 p.m. on Dec. 24 and reopens at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 26. Admission is $15 for adults\, $14 for seniors and students\, and $11 for children (ages 2 – 18). Members and kids under 2 enter free. \n*Inclement Weather Advisory\nWinter Light Garden may be subject to temporary closures in the event of heavy rains or other inclement weather conditions. \nToys for Tots\nPhipps is proud to be a collection site for Toys for Tots. We encourage you to donate new\, unwrapped toys in the Phipps Welcome Center during open hours from Nov. 24 – Dec. 15.

SUMMARY:Sensory Friendly Performance of The Nutcracker
DESCRIPTION:Capture the awe and exhilaration of the holiday season with the classic story\, iconic choreography and soaring score of The Nutcracker. This Pittsburgh-inspired production laces the traditional tale with new surprises each year and keeps the magic alive by showcasing the virtuosity of more than 170 dancers. \nPittsburgh Ballet Theatre is proud to offer sensory-friendly performances for people from all over the western Pennsylvania region and beyond! \nFrom the PBT Website: \nWhat makes a performance “sensory-friendly?” \nA sensory-friendly performance has been specially designed to serve patrons with sensory sensitivities and other special needs. We are making the entire experience sensory-friendly in three primary ways: \n\nProduction\nFront of House\nStaff\, Dancer and Volunteer Training\n\nThe production will be\, for the most part\, what you would see if you were to attend any other performance. First and foremost\, PBT wants the production to retain its artistic integrity and impact on the audience. Some things will be different\, however\, such as:  \n\nlowering sound and light levels so there are no sudden changes\neliminating any potentially startling effects\, such as the fire flares that signal Drosselmeyer’s magic tricks in The Nutcracker\nkeeping the house lights at half throughout the performance\n\nFront of house — everything from the lobby to where you are sitting — likely will be where audience members notice the biggest changes. Some adaptations will include: \n\nrelaxing of house rules–you are free to get up\, move around\, and leave whenever you need to\nallowed use of Ipads and other electronics for therapeutic uses\nvolunteers scattered throughout the theater to assist and direct audience members as needed\nquiet areas and activity areas in the lobby should your child need a break\nfidget objects and ear plugs will be available\n\nEveryone–PBT staff\, dancers\, ushers and volunteers–will be trained prior to the performance. PBT is working with many local autism and intellectual and developmental disability experts to make sure that everyone involved understands the spectrum of special needs that patrons may have and strategies for helping all patrons through this experience.
